Procurement is increasingly becoming a much more popular role, even in parts of the world where- buyer – not so long ago meant really something different, and mostly nothing to do with a company’s organization.
So what is a procurement specialist and what are the benefits?
(yes, there is a reason why we don’t call them “just buyer”- see article on the procurement vs purchasing here……….)
With about 20 years of experience in various procurement roles, I can definitely vouch for the benefits of this profession, I have learned a lot, grown as a person, and as a professional with quite some speed at times, and have enjoyed the benefits of a truly international environment.
What does a career in procurement look like?
First of all you need to know that procurement professionals are needed globally, giving you an opportunity to work abroad or travel to meet suppliers, know and understand processes and technologies.
You’ll help your organization to operate effectively and efficiently by buying the right goods and services, at the right time and the specified quality and quantity. Relax, it does not seem complicated, after a while.
Procurement is an important function in every business, meaning it offers great job security. As someone once told me, until the world goes around there will be things for sale and buyers who buy!
Procurement professionals will find they are involved in projects right from the start. This is how you quickly realize there is so much to learn and experience seeing projects become reality under your eyes and with your contribution. The first time I sourced a business and negotiated details still stays with me today, the component is still produced today, and it is a small part of the latch of your car potentially.
Your communication and strategy will greatly influence how you collaborate with suppliers to ensure there are good working relationships throughout the supply chain. Return on relationship is just as important as the return on investment you will find, if you do a good job, for sure.
We all see how the world is focusing more and more on sustainability, green footprint, and making the world a more livable place for the future too. In your procurement role you will making a difference by contributing to sourcing sustainable materials, and while managing your supply chain to minimize the risks of modern slavery.
Last, but not least, salaries and benefits in the professions are extremely competitive.
